Health benefits of sharing

My incredibly joyful and vibrant two and a half year old daughter has been belting out “This Little Light of Mine” about 30 times a day for the last few weeks.

And as she sings, she progressively crescendos throughout the song’s entirety, so that when she gets to the second verse and sings “Hide it under a bush? OH NO!  I’m gonna let it shine, LET IT SHINE, LET IT SHINE, LET IT SHINE!!!!!!!!!!” I can’t help but reflect on the just that- we all have special gifts to share and it’s essential for our wellbeing that we do so.

Sharing our time, energy, friendship, expertise, and love with others is good for our health.  It helps us create community and connect with others.

Studies show that sharing our time and talents with others:

  • lowers our blood pressure
  • decreases our incidence of depression
  • increases our self-esteem
  • helps us recover from illness faster
  • increases longevity
  • boosts happiness

Every single one of us has something to share – whether it’s with your family, your friends,  or your community, go beyond your comfort zone this week and let your light shine.
