Spring is here, and with it comes an opportunity for renewal and rebirth. It’s a great time of year to make healthy changes. Here are six easy things you can do this spring to keep you nourished and prepared for fresh starts in life.
1. Eat seasonally.
The spring bounty is inspiring — carrots, beets, arugula, berries, artichoke and asparagus to name a few. Pack your plate with these seasonal and anti-oxidant laden fruits and veggies for a great kickstart to the warmer months.
2. Buy local.
It’s a beautiful time of year to start shopping at farmers’ markets and supporting your local farmers. Local food great for you because it’s harvested at its peak, and it’s far more sustainable than purchasing foods shipped from faraway places. The shorter the time between the farm and your table, the less likely it is that the food’s nutrients will be lost.
3. Grow something.
Dust off your windowsills, prepare your gardens and grow something this season. It’s very satisfying to watch something grow, and there’s nothing more local than the food grown in your own backyard or windowsill.
4. Spend time outdoors.
Bask in the beautiful sunlight of springtime. Enjoy time outdoors and soak up some vitamin D. Being outside in the light of day elevates your mood, and even encourages healing. And if you can’t spend time outdoors, at least open a window and get some fresh air. It turns out that opening a window and increasing natural airflow in your indoor space has been shown to improve the diversity of healthy microbes in your space.
5. Move your body.
Now that the days are longer and the weather is better, it’s a great time to shrug off that excess winter weight that many of us pack on. Ride your bike, go for a walk, play with your kids in the yard and get your sweat on. Exercise can improve your mood, energy, and sex life. It combats chronic diseases, including stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and depression.
6. Get inspired.
Spring is all about new life and new opportunities. Look around at the magic and miracles outside — flowers are blooming and the landscape is green and vibrant. Make the healthy changes right now and forget about the challenges you faced in winter.
